So the schools in my town give free breakfast and lunches to kids during the summer

setosnicegirl:

And the newspaper reported on it. Well in one of the pictures they took, it showed some of the teens on their cellphones texting.

And now there are comments like this going around.

“My goodness. It may be a good thing that the Houston County school system, (sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education) is doing about providing free meals. I guess having a free meal in front you helps you be more alert so you are strong enough to use you $50 cell phone. I wish someone would fill my gap. There is not only one, but two low income kids with cell phones texting. Look at the photo.

The state can furlough teachers and cut benefits. They must use the savings to have free lunches.”

And

“Did anyone else notice something wrong with the photo of the children who were receiving their free lunch? One was busy texting on his cell phone. I guess my priorities are different. My child wouldn’t have a cell phone if I had to rely on others to feed him.”

And

I think it is great to be able to feed underprivileged and neglected children in our country. I gives me hope that there is a good future for them. Some will learn that it is OK to become a sponge off government entitlements and bleeding hearts for the rest of their lives.

Evidence rests in the feel good story of Northside lunchroom giving out meals. Every one of those children look to be able to get summer jobs, cutting grass, picking up litter, baby-sitting. But no, let us make sure they are trained to take their rightful place in society, that is, lining up for handouts.

I know there are many poor underfed children, but if you are going to try to prove this point, at least edit out the child with a cell phone. An expensive one at that, with a keyboard and all. He can afford to have one, text and still get handouts. Absurd.”

Basically it’s “How dare those poor people have cell phones and get fed. HOW DARE THEY?!”

I hope they do realize that you can get those “expensive” phones at the Dollar Store and they are prepaid right?
